Korea's Independence Movement


March 1, 1919 Korean Nationalists declare korea's independence
During the colonial period, Japan enforced the Name Order, requiring koreans to adopt Japanese-style names.                 In March 1919, Korean leaders declared independence, sparking nationwide street demonstrations.                                                  With the support of the American and Soviet military, Korea was able to ultimately                                             achieve freedom on August 15, 1945, ending Japan's 35-year occupation. The                                            liberation resulted from Japan's surrender in the Pacific War.

Beyond Albert Taylor, numerous influential foreigners have played pivotal roles in South Korean history, contributing to the nation's development and shaping its trajectory. These individuals, through their diverse contributions have left an indelible mark on various aspects of south korea. 

ERNEST THOMAS BETHELL

Bethell, a correspondent for the Daily Chronicle, arrived in Korea in 1904 to cover the Russo-Japanese War. Witnessing Japan's invasion, he resigned from his correspondent position and, on July 18, 1904, established The Daehan Maeil Sinbo, a newspaper with an English sister edition, The Korea Daily News, for which he served as the publisher and editor. Bethell used these platforms to condemn Japan's imposition of an unjust treaty on Korea, accessing global attention to the crisis.
